Micaceous clay pitcher (#98)
Unknown artist— Taos Pueblo
Micaceous clay has been used for over fifteen hundred years for cooking pots and other household items because the clay is strong, elastic, and rarely requires the addition of temper. Instead, mica serves as the temper, important in reducing shrinkage as the clay dries, lessening the chance of cracking during firing and protecting against thermal shock while cooking.
