Polychrome Plate (#45)
Virginia Gutierrez (1940–2012)— Pojoaque Pueblo
Since the 1930s, potters have experimented with different natural paints. On this plate, Guiterrez has painted a central medallion of a sun face and water serpent (Avanyu), surrounded by feathers. To ensure an improved surface on which to paint, Gutierrez ground her clay to an extra-fine quality.
