Coal Mine Mesa Tapestry Weaving (#132)
Sally Yazzie (b.1940) — Navajo (Diné)
Traders in Navajo textiles shaped consumers’ expectations as much as they also guided weavers to use superior wools and muted plant dyes, and to weave increasingly finer designs for the marketplace. The raised outline of the principal design elements is accomplished through a shift in weaving technique. The raised outline is a way to distinguish a weaving style and particular region of the reservation.
