Most potters at Acoma Pueblo today use an electric kiln to fire their pots rather than an outdoor traditional firing. The kiln removes some capriciousness from pottery making by providing an even heat and temperature and no chance that ash or charred wood will fall on a pot and mar its surface. Antonio has added a few new elements to her pot as well. The bear is shown with a heartline— symbolizing the bear’s breath or life. The grasshoppers and birds give the pot a light-hearted feel.
