Polychrome Owl Figurine (#52)
Nettie Bica (1905–1998)— Zuni Pueblo

Ceramic owls have been made to sell to non-Zunis for nearly 125 years. Owls are considered a good omen, bringing good luck. But because owls are nocturnal birds, the presence of owls around a person’s house during the daytime is not a good sign. Owls can in this way also bring messages of calamity to a family.
