Carving soapstone in the Arctic region has a long history whether in making household objects, amulets, or pieces made to sell to tourists. Point Hope remains a relatively isolated community; hunting and fishing and a bit of tourism continues to be the way most people make a living. The snowy owl is highly valued, sometimes raised from an owlet and kept for its feathers.
