Since the 1970s Pueblo pottery has been an essential source of income for many Pueblo people. Fortunately, the market for pottery could support a diversity of potters and abilities. But we should not simply judge pottery on what we think is "good" quality. For a Pueblo person, one of the most important activities one can pursue is making pottery because the maker carries on millennia-old traditions; pottery making requires the handling and making of "life" from two fertile and sacred substances, water and earth.
